Following this half-deer-path through the undergrowth
\nPlacing careful feet between the ferns
\nCompletely soothed by the rhythm of right, left, back and forth
\nLulled into a now without before or after
\nWithout plans
\nI look up to see a clearing
\nFifty yards beyond the next set of trees<\/p>\n
Entering the circle of direct light it feels quiet
\nThe few sounds rendered loud by comparison
\nThe buzzing of a lone fly
\nThe leaves disturbed by breeze
\nOur breath<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels like a church\u201d you said
\nwhen I heard a branch crunch under foot
\nor paw
\nfaint, so far away
\nover in the hills
\nto our right<\/p>\n
You find a photo on the ground
\nFaded and sepia toned
\nIt\u2019s a picture of a clearing<\/p>\n
In this clearing are the remnants of a few structures
\nPerhaps a house, garage and barn
\nOn the other side of the photo four lines of verse are written in a neat Edwardian script:<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is nothing here it seems
\nBut the burnt out reverberations of failed dreams
\nCharred spruce green walls still half stand
\nSentinels of an oft forgotten land\u201d<\/p>\n
I study the front of the picture again
\nTrying to draw some meaning from then images and words
\nI feel a shift somewhere inside me
\nA shift of some significance and yet I cannot isolate it\u2019s origin or effect<\/p>\n
It seems an interminable long time since either of us has spoken
\nI turn to you to break the silence
\nBut nothing comes to mind
\nYou seem to be having the same reaction
\nLooking at me mouth opening slightly and then closing
